Learn MoreAbout Our Training
Basic Obedience is based on the AKC Good Dog Citizen program. The best time to start your dog in obedience training is at six months, however, dogs of any age can benefit from learning obedience skills. In this program, your dog is taught to walk at your side without pulling, sit on command, and come when called.
They are also taught the down command, which means they are to lay down and be still; and the off command, which means all four paws on the ground waiting patiently without jumping up.
Basic obedience will most likely require 2 to 3 months of training.
“After having worked with several other trainers previously, I was hesitant to try another. However, our 2-year-old field lab was a handful and we needed help. Within 6 weeks of 2-3 sessions a week I was getting “wow, she’s well trained” and “how did you get her to stay there like that” comments. Pretty amazing considering how much energy she has, and how stubborn she can be. Bottom line, he’s a knowledgeable trainer and a really nice guy to work with. You can’t go wrong by giving him a call.”
TrainingDuck Dog Boot Camp
Perfect for the all-purpose retriever. Duck Dog Boot Camp is an intense program designed specifically to train your dog for waterfowl hunting. Our program is methodical, systematic and is structured to teach your dog to become an all-purpose hunting retriever.
We customize our program to your dog in such a way that will help them navigate both the requirements of working close in the field and the rigors of waterfowl hunting. At Duck Dog Boot Camp your dog will have the opportunity to experience as close to a live hunting scenario as possible.
Your dog will be evaluated throughout the training process, and we encourage clients to participate in learning how to properly handle and work their dog.
“We brought our 8-month-old lab, Abe, to Layton Retrievers this past summer for both obedience and gun dog training. We were very impressed with the wonderful work Greg did in preparing him for both hunting and a more obedient home life. We would not hesitate to recommend Layton Retriever to anyone looking for obedience or gun dog training! We look forward to working with you in the future.”
Training Hunt Test Training
In today’s retriever world, Hunt Tests are the standard used to see how well your dog will respond in a life-like hunt situation. We offer training for AKC Junior, Senior and Master titles.
At the Junior level, the test requires two land and two water marks delivered to hand.
At the Senior and Master level, the tests require the dog to be able to achieve multiple long-range marks, honor other working dogs and perform blind retrieves.
Our program takes your dog through each of the techniques necessary to be able to pass the tests you desire. This is a lengthy process and will take several months of hunt test training in order to qualify for a title.
“I couldn’t be happier with Remington’s achievement of passing 4 straight Junior tests to earn his AKC Junior Hunt Test title.”
